niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice =D
Okay....Redding California has a lot of main-streets down but they barley scratched the neighborhoods.
They still got work to do so don't let the blue map fool you but I am impressed with what they have done so far.
yeah, i noticed it too with olympia, wa (my hometown)...mostly main streets (with the side streets yet to be done). nice update though =D
Now they took away the stret view images of the Shasta County area and only one for each town.
There was a lot more an hour ago That's very odd.
Glitch?
everything looks good in shasta county from here (full coverage) at 6:00 PST. probably a short-term glitch?
TriforceofEternity, Shasta County looks fine to me, too. Everything's there as I observed it shortly after the launch. Probably bugs being worked out with the launch. I had the same problem temporarily when I was exploring parts of Vermont and New Hampshire. First they were there, later they were (seemingly) gone.
Overall Google Maps is working clunkily for me today, but I'm not surprised with such a big update. There's quite a bit of media coverage (I know because I'm subscribed to receive all Google Street View news links via Google's news service) so probably lots of people checking out the new imagery.
Have you ever had jerking problems with the map when you try to move it and then it goes to far?
Whoops! The last post was me. I somehow accidently clicked annonymous as I am real tired and am going to bed.
Good night.
PS: I wonder what Google can possibly do once they are done with Street view? Night-view?
hike view? would really love to see something like this (from anyone, not necessarily google). although, who the hell would want to carry around a giant camera on a backpack along the 2,000+ mile pacific crest trail? ;p
What will Google do when they're done with Street View? I don't think they'll ever be done. In 5 or 10 years, most of the imagery will be outdated and they'll have to start over. I just hope Street View will be profitable enough for them to continue updating and expanding it.
One thing I'm curious about - since a sort of year in review was done yesterday at the official blog - does this mean no more updates until January? I was hoping UK Street View would launch before then. I had heard Germany would launch before UK, but I guess those plans may be scrapped ...
I don't think Germany is coming out anymore. There was post recently on this sight where the German government said streetview vialated peoples privacy there so they can't release it.
Right. That's why I said it looks like they'll be scrapped. It's really stupid IMO.
I saw a news report a week or two ago that showed a man who had set up a camera outside the window of his apartment in California, filming everything that went on outside his window at a busy intersection below. He posted it on a website for anyone to view live. He soon attracted viewers from all over the world. While he was not watching, others were. Others reported seeing accidents, crime, everything you name it. Local police received calls from far away reporting crimes in progress.
This could be the future of SV - RealTime showing any point on earth the way it is that very moment. It may even show the interior of certain public buildings, such a malls. This will enable views of weather, traffic, crowds, events, and much much more.
As for countries 'banning' it, this may be temporary, as Google negotiates with the legislators, and the people want it.
As long as it isn't allowed in a private home then that's okay. Here comes "The Beast" Enoy the peaceful use of it while you can.
With the privacy fuss some folks are kicking up over Street View images, which aren't even live, I can't imagine live webcams on the scale of what Street View now is ever becoming reality - at least not from Google. The company's too high profile.
There are already thousands of live, streaming webcams worldwide, though - focused on intersections, streets, yes, even in people's houses, aquarium tanks, etc. Some even have sound.
As for the negotiations with Germany and Switzerland, I guess we'll have to see. Germany claims simply taking the pictures is illegal, and if they refuse to negotiate with Google, then what about photos on Flickr, Panoramio, 360 Cities, etc.? Will they be required to remove all photos of people in public places and private property, when consent was not obtained? Somehow I don't think so - this really seems to be more about irritation with Google in those countries.
